Our cause
River dolphins in South America face a range of threats, including mercury pollution from gold mining, overfishing, boat traffic, acoustic noise, illegal hunting and habitat fragmentation by hydroelectric dams.
To address these threats, SARDI collects geospatialised information and has the largest online database on river dolphins in the region. This information allows for risk analysis, prioritisation of mitigation actions and targeted conservation efforts, focusing on areas of greatest cumulative risk and need for intervention.
Pollution of aquatic ecosystems generated by various industries and extractive activities.
Negative interactions with the fishery.
Climate change.
Construction of infrastructure without adequate planning that considers socio-environmental criteria.
