How we work

SOUTH AMERICAN RIVER DOLPHIN INITIATIVE SARDI

Our focus for 2030

Improve conserved areas
We work to improve and strengthen the main conserved and protected areas (CPA) and indigenous territories, to ensure that the region and different countries recognize the river dolphin as a conservation object that must be protected and monitored.
We are committed to coordinating with the involved governments and securing their political commitment at a global level for the conservation and protection of the river dolphin.
Coordinate actions and influence policies to reduce harmful fishing practices for river dolphins, ensuring the conservation of aquatic biodiversity and human well-being.
We join efforts to strengthen the connectivity and quality of aquatic ecosystems in priority areas to ensure a sustainable and healthy habitat for river dolphin populations.
We work alongside communities, governments, and businesses to make them active participants in the cause and turn them into guardians of river dolphins and aquatic habitats.

Networks and Alliances

At SARDI, we believe that collaboration is key to the effective conservation of South American river dolphins and their habitats. Our network of alliances, composed of environmental organizations, local communities, researchers, and governments, reflects a shared commitment to protecting these extraordinary beings and the vital ecosystems they inhabit.
Our work has been strengthened by the support and trust of our funders: WWF European offices, Reckitt, International Whaling Commission (IWC), USAID, Fundation Segré, Supporting Conservation Leaders, The Rufford Foundation, and National Geographic Society, Conservation International, Moore Foundation, Ministério da Ciência e Tecnologia (MCTI), Whitley Fund for Nature (WFN).

Additionally, our work is due to the close coordination and collaboration we have with the governments of different countries, NGOs, national and international cooperation agencies, and significantly with indigenous and riverside communities.

Multisectoral Collaboration

Our alliances include actors from various sectors that are fundamental for biodiversity conservation. We work hand in hand with non-governmental organizations, environmental authorities, and educational entities to promote research, awareness campaigns, and protection policies. This multisectoral collaboration not only amplifies our impact but also ensures a holistic and sustainable approach to conservation.

Strengthening Communities

At the heart of our mission is the empowerment of local communities that coexist daily with these dolphins. Through environmental education and skill development programs, we promote local stewardship and community participation in monitoring and conservation activities. By strengthening communities, we not only protect river dolphins but also improve the quality of life for people.
