Global Declaration

SOUTH AMERICAN RIVER DOLPHIN INITIATIVE SARDI

Global impact on river dolphin conservation

The Global Declaration for River Dolphins, signed in Bogotá on October 24, 2023, marks an unprecedented commitment between countries in Asia and South America to protect and revitalize river dolphin populations, which are key indicators of health from the rivers. This initiative seeks to stop the decline in dolphin populations, which have fallen by 73% since 1980 due to threats such as unsustainable fishing, pollution and habitat destruction.

Strategies and commitments

The declaration establishes a framework for cooperative action, including strengthening protection laws, eradicating gillnets and expanding protected areas. This agreement not only focuses its efforts on the direct protection of dolphins, but also promotes the improvement of the overall health of large rivers, thus benefiting the communities and economies that depend on these ecosystems.
